Energy consumption increased by almost 4% last year, despite record high energy prices. The cold climate and economic growth after the resumption of society contributed to the increase.

Energy consumption ended at around 223.4 TWh last year, according to the Norwegian Bureau of Statistics (SSB). This is a year that is 0.7 TWh higher than the previous consumption record registered in 2010 and colder than usual.

Last year, winter was on average 0.7 degrees colder than normal, said Marin Bierbert, senior adviser to the Norwegian Statistics Bureau. In the very cold winter, people are using more energy.

Electricity accounts for more than half of Norway’s energy consumption, which doubled in 2021. At 120 TWh, it is about 3% higher than the previous year. In the industrial sector, total energy consumption increased by 5.6% year-on-year.

In the service industry and households, energy consumption increased by 3.8%. Due to the cold winter and soaring electricity prices, consumption of wood for home heating increased by 11% year-on-year.
