State of Russia in 1982

The early 1980s was a period of stagnation, or, as Leonid Brezhnev called it, known as Real Socialism. However, the Soviet leader, who ruled for almost 20 years, finally died that year, paving the way for a time of change known as perestroika.

Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev, General Secretary of the Communist Party, was already very ill. At the age of 76, he was in poor health and often spoke inconsistently.
