Survey: The number of regular drinkers has decreased in the Czech Republic

According to a survey conducted by the National Institute of Public Health (SZÚ), the number of people who drink alcohol daily or every two days decreased from 19.8% to 15.4% between 2020 and 2021. The institute also announced on Monday that the average rate of pure alcohol consumption per capita also dropped from 8 liters in 2020 to 6.9 percent in 2021 (excluding abstainers).

According to SZÚ, an average of one in six Czechs now drinks alcohol daily or semi-daily. On the other hand, 10.6% of men and 4.1% of women drink harmful amounts of alcohol daily.

Studies show that about a quarter of the population is still smoking, but people are increasingly using alternatives such as e-cigarettes. The number of smokers actually increased by 1.3% from 2020 to 2021, but the National Institute of Public Health says the overall trend is one of the smokers whose population has declined since 2012.
