Local media have reported increased drone activity in the past few days in Afghanistan’s Helmand and Kandahar provinces. The United States is reportedly ramping up efforts to target al-Qaeda and her ISIS-K in this landlocked country, which has been under Taliban control since August 2021.

On Sunday, Taliban Defense Minister Maulvi Mohammed Yacoub accused Pakistan of allowing the United States to conduct drone operations in Afghanistan.

“According to information, US drones are coming from Pakistan and entering Afghan territory,” the minister said.

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (the term the Taliban use for its government) wants Pakistan to stop violating Afghanistan’s sovereignty.

At a press conference in Kabul, the minister warned Washington of “serious consequences” if the US did not stop flying drones in Afghan airspace.

The minister also boasted of the group’s growing military strength, saying it had repaired 60 helicopters in the past year.

Taliban accusations come against the backdrop of alleged murder of al-Qaeda* leader Ayman al zawahiri US airstrikes in Kabul.

The IEA said an ongoing investigation had not found Zawahiri’s body.

Locals in Afghanistan’s Helmand and Kandahar provinces have reported massive drone activity in recent days.

The United States said it was concerned about the resurgence of al Qaeda and the strengthening of Daesh* in Afghanistan. Washington said the US will maintain “beyond the horizon” capabilities to respond to threats in Afghanistan.
