President Samia Suluhu Hassan hinted at a remodeling earlier this week and said he wanted to expel government officials suspected of siding with rivals prior to the 2025 elections.

Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan reorganized the cabinet when he fought to cover the fighting in the country’s ruling party.

The move took place on Saturday shortly after the chairman of Congress resigned after Hassan and the public dropped out over controversial comments criticizing the level of government borrowing.

Hassan, who became Tanzania’s first female president last March, remodeled earlier this week, saying he wanted to expel government officials suspected of siding with rivals prior to the 2025 elections. Alluded to.

The changes announced by President Hussein Katanga have dismissed several senior ministers, including the Minister of Justice, the Minister of Housing, the Minister of Industry and the Minister of Investment.

Hassan accused rivals within the government last month for trying to undermine her leadership at a rare public show of division within the ruling Chama Cha Mapindus class.

Foreign borrowing

In addition to tensions, Parliamentary Speaker Job Nudugai resigned Thursday after criticizing Hassan for “excessive” foreign borrowing in Tanzania and accusing the government of “begging bowls.”

“I didn’t expect anyone leading the pillars of the nation to say such words,” Hassan argued, arguing that the government would continue to borrow for development projects.

Gross domestic product at the end of 2020 was $ 64.7 billion, compared to $ 36 billion in total external and domestic debt in November, according to figures released by the Central Bank of Tanzania.

Hassan, dubbed the “bulldozer” in his authoritarian leadership style, became president of the East African nation after the death of his predecessor, John Magufuli, who oversaw the crackdown on objections during his rule.

She tried to break some of Magufuli’s policies, but was called a “dictator” by opponents, leaving fear of political and media freedom.
