The world’s longest suspension bridge opens in the Czech Republic

Skybridge 721 is not only really long, but also very expensive. A brave adventurer who chooses to travel three-quarters of a kilometer across a mountain valley enters the bridge at a height of 1,125 meters above sea level and exits at a height of 1,135 meters. The lowest point is 95 meters.

The Skybridge replaces the previous title holder of Portugal’s Arouca 516, the longest bridge in the world, at a distance of 205 meters. One day, when the fog in the mountains gets low, you feel like you are walking on the clouds, surrounded only by the mountaintops surrounded by forests.

The Skybridge is part of the Dorney Moraba Mountain Resort and is a popular destination for skiers and nature lovers, including the longest mountain bobsleigh rack in the Czech Republic and the world’s largest mammoth model.

Tomáš Drápal, the resort’s marketing director, told Czech Radio that the size of the structure made construction difficult on its own.

“There were dozens of security measures and technical anomalies that had to be considered when installing the bridge. The pylon had to be installed deep inside the hardest mountain rocks.

“Obtaining a cable to hang a bridge was also a challenge. No one makes such a long rope here. It had to be imported from Italy, which was in the middle of a coronavirus pandemic, so all sorts of Meaning to address legal and logistical barriers. “

A giant 11-meter-high pylon firmly roots the end of the bridge in the mountains above the valley and secures a 7-centimeter-thick steel rope that forms the backbone of the suspension mechanism.

The construction team used heavy equipment and drones to build a 400-ton structure. The owner states that it is resistant to high speed winds, frost and other potential hazards. The protective mesh fence acts as a guardrail, but local staff warn that it may not be the best way to put your child on your shoulder when crossing the Skybridge.

The resort is a children’s paradise, but many for locals who are afraid that the new bridge may attract too many visitors to an area that already welcomes 700,000 to 800,000 tourists a year. It is also the cause of dissatisfaction.

It has happened before. Six years ago, when the center opened the 55-meter-high “Cloud Route” (Stezka voblacích), the nearby village of Dorny Morava was overwhelmed by cars and tourists trying to experience new attractions.

Later, 250 new parking spaces were created, and local mayor Richard Novak told news site iDnes.cz that he had requested police patrols to ensure that parking rules were being followed.

Those who want to experience the Skybridge will find that it is part of the resort’s “Timebridge” (most Chas) educational route through the interwar fort, tracing the history of the region from 1938 to the present. Probably. According to the organizers, the pass also includes an interactive game that can be unlocked on your smartphone, turning your journey into an adventure.
