Elon Musk has said Twitter Inc will launch a new verified service next Friday after a string of delays and mishaps with fake accounts.

Twitter previously suspended its $8 (€7.69) subscription program to address a growing problem of users impersonating major brands.

Twitter Verified is Musk’s attempt to differentiate between different classes of users and generate much-needed revenue.

Businesses receive a gold check mark and are protected from blue check mark accounts with rebranded names and photos.

During the initial rollout, one account claiming to be Nintendo Inc. posted an image of Super Mario with the middle finger up, while another impersonating pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly & Co. claimed free insulin. I tweeted that it happened. apology. An alleged Tesla account joked about the automaker’s safety record.

Gray check marks are for government accounts. Musk didn’t specify if this meant lawmakers or only related to official government accounts such as @GOVUK and @CIA. .

All verified accounts are manually authenticated, but the process could be more complicated as Twitter lost more than half its headcount after Musk cut staff.
