MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Ukrainian hackers have launched a major attack on the Russian payment system Mir and its operator National Payment Card System (NSPK), Russian newspaper Kommersant said on Friday in a cybersecurity bulletin. Citing sources.

Earlier on Friday, NSPK Information Security Officer Artem Gutnik said the number of cyberattacks against the NSPK has not doubled or tripled since February, but has far increased. He mentioned the constant activity of hackers, adding that the Russian banking industry is highly reliable and that Russia’s information security is probably one of the best in the world.

Ukrainian hackers reportedly launched a DDoS attack against the system amid news that some Russia-friendly countries may refuse to work with the Mir payment system.

A cybersecurity source confirmed the attack to Kommersant, but the Bank of Russia and the NSPK declined to comment on the matter.

Media sources cited hackers using browsers and primitive DDoS tools to generate traffic and interfere with payment processing and terminal operations.

On September 15, the U.S. Treasury Department announced that sanctions would apply to financial institutions supporting the Mir payment network outside Russia.

Turkish banks Ishbank and Denizbank confirmed to Sputnik on Monday that they have suspended the Mir bank card service, citing US and UK sanctions against Russia.

On Friday, Uzbek’s national banking service Uzcard suspended processing of the Russian payment system Mir’s card, citing technical problems, after the US threatened secondary sanctions. At the same time, the co-branded meal card will continue to operate in standard mode on the territory of Uzbekistan, the designated service.
