UNICEF warned this weekend that about 1.5 million children have fled Ukraine, many at risk of trafficking.
As the war continues, countless others are fleeing inland, UNICEF added in a press release released Saturday.
“The war in Ukraine leads to massive domestic flights and the influx of refugees, a situation that can lead to a sharp increase in trafficking and a serious crisis of child protection,” UNICEF Europe and Afshan Khan, Director of the Central Asian Region, warned.
He said the fleeing children were extremely vulnerable to being separated from their families, exploited and exposed to trafficking.
UNICEF states that between February 24th and March 7th, Romania alone identified 500 cross-border children.
They say the total number of refugees is probably much higher and are calling on the authorities of the countries that accept refugees to increase the protection of their children.
