University of Debrecen joins EU HORIZON space research and development

Researchers at the University of Debrecen in eastern Hungary are participating in the 3 million EU HORIZON project to develop and manufacture polymer aerogels that can be used for thermal insulation in space, the university told MTI on Friday.

Project manager József Kalmár says the goal of the project is to establish airgel production in Europe and not rely on supplies from the US or China.

The University of Debrecen, a nine-member consortium led by the German Aerospace Center (DLR), will work on the project starting in November. The consortium’s private sector partners include ArianeGroup and Thales Alenia Space. About 60 professionals are involved in the project, including his four from Debrecen.

The University of Debrecen already has a pilot plant that can produce airgel and has been collaborating with DLR since 2019.
