Unusual snow at the blanket shrine in Tokyo, flight cancellation

Snow covered Tokyo on Thursday as hours of blizzards forced more than 100 domestic flights to be canceled and the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a heavy snow warning in Tokyo for the first time in four years.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, it could snow up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) in 12 hours, and residents pushed their bicycles with their umbrellas and heavy snow began to fall.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a heavy snow warning to the metropolitan area for the first time since 2018, warning of the possibility of traffic congestion.

Airport officials told AFP that domestic departures and 53 arrivals at Haneda Airport, the capital of Japan, were canceled due to snow, but international flights were not canceled.

A JR East railroad operator said on its website that some commuter trains in Tokyo were delayed due to heavy snow.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warned residents on Twitter that “it is necessary to be careful of heavy snowfall” in central Tokyo.

“A heavy snow warning has been issued … The disaster area may expand. Please check the latest weather and traffic information!”

At Sensoji Temple in central Tokyo, a popular tourist destination, visitors wearing traditional kimono and “geta” wearing open-toed socks pass by the landmark red pillars and golden bells while it snows. I did.

This scene was more violent for commuters navigating unusual weather events in Ginza’s shopping and business districts.

“It’s a little unusual for Tokyo to snow so much in January,” said Keiichi Masuda, a 37-year-old worker in Tokyo, who hurried home.

“You need to be careful not to slip while walking.”

However, other people in the area, such as Shigeko Nagahama (73), who lived in Tokyo and took pictures of the iconic Kabuki-za, took time to absorb the unusual snowfall.

She stood with others and enjoyed the snow falling on the traditional architecture of the building that hosts the Kabuki performances.

“It’s a beautiful sight. I think snow gives it a quaint aura,” she said.
