Urgent warning to Irish parents about “Killer Teddy” in online video where advice was issued

Irish parents have been warned about the online video “Killer Teddy”.
The Suicide Awareness and Mental Health Initiative Northern Ireland (SAMHI) has sent an alert on social media.
They write: “This is Huggy Waggy. It’s an ominous character that kids come across online.
“Parents are urged not to let their children watch Killer Teddy’s horrifying TikTok and YouTube videos.
“Police warned the character after seeing some children recreating bear behavior in the playground.”
The Safer Schools NI app provided parents with important advice on interacting with their children’s videos.

I advise parents not to take it out so that their children don’t get curious and go looking for the video.
They added: “If your child doesn’t mention Huggy Wuggy or Poppy Playtime, don’t name it.
“You may arouse their curiosity, which can lead to searching content for themselves on platforms they may be able to access.
“If you hear the child taking care of you mention Huggy Waggy, pause and calm down.

“Reassure them”
“They may have heard conversations at school or online, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ve viewed the content or have a complete understanding of who Huggy Waggy is. There is none.
“Ask them about the content they enjoy watching online, and whether what they see has upset or scared them or their friends.
“If you see them upset, reassure them that they are safe. Knowing that children can come and talk to you without fear of judgment. It is important to be there.
“If necessary, show me the video or game, and if you’re worried, follow the appropriate reporting instructions.”

“If your child has a nightmare or is worried about what they have seen, it is important to discuss expressing their feelings.
“Our emotion journal can be used to help children express complex emotions.”
