US imposes sanctions on Iran IRGC affiliates over cyber activity – Middle East Monitor

The US on Wednesday imposed sanctions on individuals and entities associated with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard over what it called Tehran’s “malicious” cyber and ransomware activities. Reuters report.

The sanctions are part of a joint response by several US agencies, including the Justice and State Departments, the US Treasury Department said in a statement.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard is a powerful faction that controls the business empire, as well as the elite armed forces and intelligence forces that Washington accuses of running a global campaign of extremism.

The U.S. Treasury Department said it had imposed sanctions on 10 individuals and two entities for their cyber activities.

Ransom software works by encrypting the victim’s data. Hackers typically provide victims with keys in exchange for cryptocurrency payments, which can run into the hundreds of thousands and even millions of dollars.
