On Monday, President Joe Biden confirmed that a US drone strike in Afghanistan this weekend killed al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, declaring “justice has been served.”

“This terrorist leader is no more,” Biden said in a White House speech that night.

Biden said U.S. intelligence officials tracked Zawahiri to a house in downtown Kabul where he and his family were hiding.
The president approved the surgery last week and it was performed on Sunday.

“I hope this decisive action will result in another closure,” he said in a national address.

CIA drone attack

The house in which Zawahiri was living when he was killed belonged to the chief aide to senior Taliban leader Sirajuddin Haqqani, the senior intelligence official said.

The official also added that CIA ground teams and aerial reconnaissance conducted after the drone strike confirmed Zawahiri’s death.

The loss of Zawahiri eliminates the man who, first as Osama bin Laden’s deputy since 1998 and then as his successor, has shaped al-Qaeda more than anyone else.

Together he and Bin Laden turned the guns of the network on the United States and carried out the worst terrorist attack ever on the continental United States, the September 11, 2001 suicide hijacking.
