Nassau, Bahamas-On behalf of the US Government, the United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) and the Bahamas National Emergency Administration (NEMA) signed a government-wide disaster response exercise, Restoration Island K’s, last week.
This is the fourth iteration of the Restoration Island Cays, which tests the Bahamas’ response to country-affecting Category 5 hurricanes.
At the National Emergency Operations Center, NEMA staff worked with personnel representing the emergency support functions of several Bahamian ministries.
In response to a disaster simulated across the archipelago, the Bahamas Defense Force installed part of a temporary modular shelter system donated by US NORTHCOM in September 2020. This was the first time that the RBDF had to use equipment donated by US NORTHCOM in this scenario.
Other rescue operations include:
– Royal Bahamas Police Leads Flood Rescue Team on Great Exuma Island
– Wildland Fire Team responded in Mayaguana
– NEMA practiced moving relief supplies from a warehouse donated by the US Department of Defense to the roll-on / roll-off auxiliary ship HMBS Lawrence Major.
Humanitarian and disaster response experts in the United States facilitated this exercise to further enhance collaboration and interoperability between partners between ministries and to validate the government’s overall response to the crisis.
This exercise highlights the strength of the US-Bahamas relationship and strengthens the US commitment to its Bahamas neighbors, who are key partners in disaster response.
