Jammu: Twelve people were killed and 14 injured in a crowd accident at the Mata Weishno Devi Shrine in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday.
A shrine official said the stampede occurred when a large number of believers entered Matavaishno de Vivawan without a permit.
“To celebrate the New Year, many believers have come to pay homage to the shrine. Stampede occurred around 2:45 am today.
“It took place outside the shrine’s Sanctum Sanctorum. Government officials and the shrine’s board of directors are there.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally monitors rescue and rescue operations,” officials said.
“I am very saddened by the loss of life caused by the crowd accident at Mata Weishno Devi Bawan. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. Modi said on Twitter. The Prime Minister’s Office also announced an amount of Rs 20,000 each for the dead from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.
The PMO said the amount would be given to the families of those who died because of Stampede. The injured will be given 50,000 rupees, the Prime Minister’s Office added.
