Virgin Mobile UAE announces new biodegradable SIM card

Virgin Mobile UAE, part of the Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company (EITC), has launched a new biodegradable SIM card, the first telecommunications brand in the country to introduce eco-friendly SIMs.

The move is in line with the UAE’s vision of creating a vibrant new green economy that provides the world with a unique model for sustainable development, the statement said.

Biodegradable SIM is made of oxo biodegradable plastic, which slowly decomposes in the presence of oxygen and UV radiation and decomposes into small pieces. When disposing of in landfill, the disassembly process can take only 4-6 months. The statement added that this provides significant improvements compared to the hundreds of years that normal plastics are estimated to take to decompose.

Rob Beswick, Managing Director of Virgin Mobile UAE, commented: He can break the traditional link between economic growth and environmental degradation and “make more things better with less effort.” This is outlined in the United Nations’ 12th Sustainable Development Goals (SDG12), which requires us to ensure sustainable consumption and production (SCP). We all need to work together to ensure a joint effort to build a better future. Virgin Mobile UAE achieved zero net carbon emissions in its business last year. Our mission is to be carbon negative. “

It is estimated that at least 14 million tonnes of plastic flow into the ocean each year, affecting fragile ecosystems. Despite its small size, each SIM card needs to be punched out of a credit card-sized plastic sheet, which is then discarded and causes plastic waste in the telecommunications industry. This waste is increasing as consumers demand SIM cards.

“We are moving to the use of biodegradable SIM cards that break down without leaving a trace, which is an important step in the right direction, but the move to eSIM without a physical SIM card is still the most sustainable. It’s an option, “Beswick added. ..

Today, Virgin Mobile UAE allows customers to comfortably use the app at home or in the office to convert their physical SIM to eSIM.

Last year, Virgin Mobile Middle East and Africa promised to reduce operational carbon dioxide emissions, remove disposable plastic from SIMs and recharge cards by the end of 2021.

The company has promised to be completely carbon-neutral throughout its business through a series of initiatives designed to eliminate and balance carbon emissions across the corporate and customer footprints.

To achieve that goal, we partnered with the Dubai Carbon Center of Excellence to review carbon usage practices throughout our business.
