What would be considered a Dental Emergency and when to see a doctor?

Dental emergencies can be distressing. Nobody is ready for them, and they tend to happen at the least expected moments. But what can be defined as a dental emergency?

According to the American Dental Association, dental emergencies are “potentially life-threatening and require immediate treatment to stop ongoing tissue bleeding, alleviate severe pain or infection.” This definition is completed with situations that are not considered life-threatening, but they do require urgent dental attention, such as dental pain, swelling, dental trauma, and major cosmetic problems.

At BowTie Dental Studio, the most common reasons for emergency visits are the following:

  • Dental pain

Many factors can trigger this unbearable pain, including decay, infections, dental trauma and bruxism. The emergency dentist will find out what’s causing the discomfort and do what’s necessary to ease the pain.

In the meantime: Rinse the area with warm, salty water and take over-the-counter painkillers if necessary. Don’t put aspirin on the affected tooth.

  • Uncontrollable bleeding

Some wounds don’t heal on their own. If, after a surgical procedure or an accident, you have a wound that doesn’t stop bleeding after 10 or 15 minutes of pressure, seek dental care. The wound might need stitches or other procedures to heal correctly.

In the meantime: Apply pressure to the wound with gauze, tissue or a clean cloth. Change it if the blood soaks through.

  • Dental fractures

Oral trauma typically results in dental fractures. The treatment of the affected tooth (or teeth) will vary according to how extensive the fracture is, being as simple as a tooth color filling or as complex as a dental implant. The team will evaluate your particular case and recommend you a course of treatment.

In the meantime: Rinse the area with warm or salty water, and visit the office as soon as possible. Apply a cold compress to reduce the swelling.

  • Loose or knock out teeth

More severe dental trauma can end up in loose or completely knocked out teeth. The treatment success is time-dependent in both cases, so it is vital to visit the dental office immediately to have the affected teeth repositioned or reimplanted.

In the meantime: In case of a knocked-out tooth, find the missing tooth, hold it by the crown, and rinse it thoroughly. Store and transport the tooth in a container with milk or saline solution until you reach the office.

How to book an appointment with an Emergency Dentist?

The team at BowTie Dental Studiois always ready to help you. If you or your family are experiencing a dental emergency, you can schedule an emergency consultation online, and if the situation requires urgent attention, you are invited to attend the dental office in Brooklyn with no previous appointment.

What to expect from an emergency dental appointment?

During a typical emergency appointment, the dentist will ask you for your medical history and evaluate your case clinically and radiographically. Your signs and symptoms will be treated that very same visit (pain, swelling, bleeding, etc.). Then you will get an appointment to undergo the dental procedure required to solve your problem permanently.
