White House: US had ‘successful’ weekend counterterrorism strike in Afghanistan
An explosion occurred on Sunday in the Shirpur district of Afghanistan’s capital Kabul after a rocket struck a house, but no one was injured, a spokesman for the country’s interior ministry said.
The US military successfully conducted a counterterrorism operation against Al-Qaeda* operatives in Afghanistan last weekend. The White House said Monday that the operation caused no civilian casualties.
A senior government official reportedly told correspondents that it was the CIA that carried out the drone strike in Kabul over the weekend.
“Over the weekend, the United States conducted a counter-terrorist operation against key al-Qaeda targets in Afghanistan. The operation was successful and caused no civilian casualties,” the official said.

At least two people were killed and 12 injured in a terrorist attack at a cricket match on Friday in Kabul last Friday. At the time, sources with the Afghanistan Cricket Board said at least seven people were killed in the stadium explosion.
The development comes a week before the one-year anniversary of the complete withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, and after two decades of conflict with the West, a Taliban insurgency took control of the country.
