Zac Efron's mysterious hospitalization after pool incident revealed

Zac Efron was rushed to hospital in Ibiza over the weekend after diving deep into the swimming pool at his Ibiza villa early Saturday morning, causing his chest to hit the bottom and filling his lungs with water.

A source told TMZ on Monday that the 36-year-old actor jumped into a pool while out with friends on the Spanish island.

The San Luis Obispo, California-born entertainer said he “gave a lot of water to his lungs” after hitting the bottom of the pool.

Sources told the outlet that the Iron Claw leader showed “signs of distress” after the incident, at which point security officials rushed to his aid.

The “High School Musical” alum “was momentarily drowsy” and was later taken to a medical facility “as a precautionary measure,” a source told the outlet.

Efron appears to be recovering after the incident and was pictured on social media working out after the horrific incident.

A source told the outlet that medical personnel performed a chest X-ray on Efron to try to determine if he had fluid in his lungs.

Efron had been given the all-clear by doctors, but was taken out of the hospital long after a group of photographers from the area learned he was in the medical facility and gathered outside.

On Sunday, Efron posted a photo to his Instagram Story of himself balancing on an exercise ball and lifting dumbbells at the resort. After treatment at the hospital, Efron updated his fans on his condition, writing, “Happy and healthy. Thank you for all the well wishes.”

According to the outlet, Efron was spotted dining in Ibiza on Sunday evening, before returning to the US on Monday.

A TMZ source previously revealed that the actor was “discovered in the pool by two people working at the villa and pulled from the water.”

A representative for Efron confirmed to the outlet that the actor was hospitalized “as a precautionary measure” following a “minor” incident, and was released from hospital on Saturday morning and is “recovering well.”

Asked why he needed to be hospitalized if the issue was merely minor, Efron's representative reiterated that his hospital stay was merely a precautionary measure.

Prior to the incident, he had been present onstage at a show by Dutch DJ Martin Garrix.

The Disney Channel alum has been splitting his time between Ibiza and Europe in recent weeks. Two weeks ago, he was in Ibiza spending the afternoon on a yacht with friends, following a trip to St. Tropez early last month.

The actor has in the past shared his experiences taking part in extreme sports, including diving, through his social media accounts.

The incident comes more than a decade after he “shattered” his jaw in 2013 when a sock slipped while he was running at home and he hit his chin on a granite fountain.

In 2022, he told Men's Health magazine that he lost consciousness and woke up with his “jawbone hanging off his face.”

Efron said that when he was injured, his masseter muscles, located on the inside of his face and jaw, “compensated” for the injury and grew in size, resulting in a remarkable transformation.

This, he says, is why he looked different back then: “My masseter muscles grew. They got really big.”

Following the incident, rumors swirled about Efron having plastic surgery, but the handsome actor insisted that the changes were simply the result of his shattered jaw.

The Disney Channel alum was photographed in Los Angeles in June and has been spending the past few weeks in Ibiza and Europe.

The incident came more than 10 years after he “shattered” his jaw when his sock slipped while he was running at home and he smashed his chin into a granite fountain.

The Gold actor also claimed he had no idea he had become a hot topic on social media for actually changing the way his chin looks, until his mother asked him if he had had the surgery.

“If I cared as much about what other people thought of me as I do, I would never have been able to do this job,” he told the magazine.

Efron began trending on Twitter in April 2021 after appearing in the video for “Earth Day! The Musical,” in which he showed off a more pronounced square jaw and thicker jawline. In the video, Efron enthusiastically called Bill Nye a “genius” after hearing that he and Justin Bieber were creating a fictional Earth Day musical.

This led fans to speculate whether the handsome star had undergone plastic surgery.

Efron's friend Kyle Sandilands also spoke out on his behalf, saying there's no way the Baywatch star would do something like that and likening him to an oil painting by one of the masters. The Australian radio host, who has known Zac for years, dismissed the speculation on “The Kyle and Jackie O Show” at the time.

“I know if he's had plastic surgery,” Kyle declared, before telling co-star Jackie O. Henderson that “of course” Zac hasn't had any plastic surgery.

He also said there would be no point in the High School Musical star undergoing plastic surgery since he's already so good-looking: “It's like buying a Picasso painting and letting a kid finger paint it. Why bother?”

Last month, fans again questioned his casting after watching the new Netflix film “A Family Affair,” in which he co-stars with Nicole Kidman.
