Zionist strikes set fire to Syrian harbor

Beirut: Zionist airstrikes struck the port of Latakia in Syria before dawn yesterday, causing a fire that lit the Mediterranean coast in a second such attack on a major cargo hub this month, Syrian state media reported. Since the outbreak of the Syrian Civil War in 2011, Zionist organizations have regularly bombed conflict-torn neighbors, primarily to Syrian government forces, allied Iranian support forces, and Hezbollah fighters. I did.

However, this is the second time it has hit the port of Latakia in the heart of President Bashar al-Assad’s minority Alawite community. “Around 3:21 am, the (Zionist) enemy launched an aerial attack with several missiles from the direction of the Mediterranean … targeting the container yard at the port of Latakia,” Syrian state news agency SANA said, military sources. Stated. He added that the strike caused “serious property damage.” When asked about the strike, a Zionist military spokesman said, “I will not comment on foreign media reports.”

A photo released by SANA showed firefighters training hoses with a stack of burning containers illuminating the night sky. According to the news agency, the container was loaded with “engine oil and spare parts for cars and other vehicles.” However, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based war watchdog, said the cargo was “weapons and munitions” that exploded in “a powerful explosion felt in and around Latakia.” It is unclear whether the weapons belong to Iran or other suppliers.

Latakia Governor Ismail Hilal said firefighters had controlled the flames and extinguished the embers by noon, SANA reported. This is the second time this month that a Zionist entity has attacked a container yard in the port of Latakia. Russia, another major ally of the Syrian government, operates a naval base at the port of Tartus, 85 km south.

So far this year, Zionist organizations have targeted Syria almost 30 times, killing 130 people, including five civilians and 125 Loyalist fighters, according to observatory statistics. On December 7, a strike aimed at transporting Iran’s weapons was carried out in Latakia, the first port since the start of the civil war. Zionist entities rarely comment on individual strikes against their northern neighbors, but admit that hundreds have increased since 2011.

Zionist troops reported that they attacked about 50 targets in Syria in 2020. In the worst operation since the strike began, Zionist organizations killed 57 government troops and allied fighters in eastern Syria in January this year. Zionist troops defended the strike as a necessary step to prevent its great enemy, Iran, from building a foothold at its gateway.

Maj. Gen. Ahalon Hariba, head of the Zionist military intelligence, accused Iran of “continuing to promote destruction and terrorism” in the Middle East. In the Shadow War, Zionist entities have launched a sabotage campaign against Iran’s nuclear program, targeting suspicious Iranian military installations in Syria. Iran was a major supporter of the Syrian government in the conflict 10 years ago.

It funded, armed and commanded many Syrian and foreign militia groups fighting with regular troops, centered on the powerful Hezbollah group in Lebanon. The conflict in Syria has killed nearly 500,000 people since it began in 2011 with the brutal crackdown on peaceful demonstrations. – AFP
