Ukraine Conflict Kyiv Deploys Extended-Range US Missiles for Inaugural Operation
Ukraine War: Kyiv Deploys Extended-Range US Missiles Confidentially
Recent reports confirm that Kyiv has begun using longer-range US missiles, a covert element of a prior US support package. These missiles, which arrived this month, have already been deployed to target Russian positions in occupied Crimea.
This development coincides with President Joe Biden’s approval of a new $61 billion aid package for Ukraine, including both economic and military support. The extended-range Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) constitute a significant enhancement to Ukraine’s arsenal, capable of striking targets up to 300km away.
Despite concerns about potential escalation and impacts on US military readiness, the decision to provide these missiles underscores the urgency of Ukraine’s situation. The move was authorized by President Biden in February but was not publicly disclosed to maintain operational security, as requested by Ukrainian officials.
While these missiles offer Kyiv greater offensive capabilities, it is acknowledged that they alone cannot alter the course of the conflict. However, they enable Ukraine to strike deeper into Russian-held territories, targeting critical infrastructure and logistics centers.
Recent deployments have reportedly included strikes on a Russian airfield in Crimea and on troops in the occupied city of Berdyansk. Although Russia downplays the significance of this new weaponry, its deployment marks a strategic shift in the conflict dynamics.
Kyiv’s urgent appeals for Western assistance reflect the dire situation on the ground, with dwindling ammunition stocks and ongoing Russian advances. The newly approved aid package aims to address these pressing needs, with a billion-dollar weapons package expected to be the initial disbursement.
President Zelensky welcomed the aid package, emphasizing the need to swiftly counter Russian aggression. Despite the looming threat of further Russian offensives, Ukraine remains determined to resist and defend its sovereignty.
As the conflict enters its third year, the toll on both sides continues to mount, underscoring the urgent need for a diplomatic resolution to end the violence and suffering.
