Porsche’s Upcoming ‘K1’ SUV Spotted During Testing Before Expected 2027 Launch
Almost two years ago, Porsche unveiled its intentions to introduce a new top-tier SUV positioned above the Cayenne in its lineup, utilizing a novel electric vehicle platform. Recently, our spy photographer managed to capture images of an early prototype undergoing testing near Porsche’s development facilities in Germany, offering a glimpse into the size and design of this upcoming crossover, internally referred to as the “K1,” slated for release in the 2027 model year.
From the photos, it’s apparent that the K1 boasts a larger and more robust stature compared to the Cayenne. Its squared-off roofline is emphasized by a side window profile that ascends at the rear instead of curving downwards, though this aspect may feature camouflage disguising the true shape. While the front and rear bumpers remain concealed, the headlights exhibit a striking resemblance to those seen on the 2024 Macan EV, while slender taillights integrate seamlessly into a black trim piece spanning the liftgate’s width.
Although Porsche has yet to officially confirm the K1’s seating capacity, it’s speculated to accommodate up to seven passengers, with its expansive silhouette indicating the likelihood of three rows. Utilizing a sportier iteration of Volkswagen’s Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), the K1 is anticipated to incorporate a 900-volt battery enabling rapid charging, achieving a remarkable 10 to 80 percent charge in just 12 minutes.
Expected to feature four-wheel steering for enhanced maneuverability in tight spaces, the K1 will also benefit from an electronic differential to deliver Porsche-like handling. Standard air suspension is anticipated for a luxurious ride quality, while advanced automated driving capabilities will be integrated into the vehicle.
Competing against models like the two-row Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV and the seven-seat Rivian R1S, alongside the forthcoming Range Rover EV, the Porsche K1 is likely to command a price exceeding $100,000, potentially surpassing the base price of the Cayenne Turbo at $148,550. Production is scheduled to commence in 2026, with the flagship SUV slated for release in the U.S. for the 2027 model year.
