Streamlining the Process: Adding Your Driver’s License to Apple Wallet on iPhone and Apple Watch

Apple suggests that this digital ID can be used for entry into bars or concerts, age verification within certain apps, or for security clearance at select airports, all with just your iPhone or Apple Watch. However, virtual forms of identification like this are relatively new and not universally accepted, so it’s wise to carry a physical ID as a backup in case the digital version isn’t recognized.

Here’s how to add a driver’s license to Apple Wallet:

1. Open the Wallet app and tap the plus sign.
2. Select “Driver’s License” or “State ID.”
3. Choose your state.
4. Scan both the front and back of your license.
5. Follow the prompts to confirm your identity.
6. Wait for approval from your state, usually just a few minutes.

After your ID is successfully added, you might receive a letter from your state’s Department of Driver Services confirming the addition to your Apple wallet.

It’s important to note that this feature is not yet available in all 50 states. As of now, the supported states include Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, and Maryland. Apple is actively working to expand this feature to more states.

Some TSA checkpoints also accept digital IDs for airport security. To use your digital ID at TSA:

1. Unlock your phone and hold it near the TSA reader.
2. Your photo will be taken.
3. The requested information will display on your phone.
4. Double-click the side button to grant TSA access and confirm using your biometric ID.

However, not all TSA checkpoints may support digital IDs, so it’s advisable to carry a physical ID as well.
